Showtime is bringing down the axe on Emmy winner Toni Collette. On Monday, the cable network cancelled the
Australian’s black comedy-drama United States of Tara while ordering a fourth season of Edie Falco’s Nurse Jackie.
The June 20 third season closer will also serve as a series finale, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Created by Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tara centers on the adventures of a mom who suffers from multiple personality disorder — also known as dissociative identity disorder. Collette has won several awards for her performance, including an Emmy Award in 2009 and a Golden Globe the following year.
Tara has faltered in the ratings since its successful launch two years ago, averaging just 326,000 viewers in its Monday 10:30 PM timeslot. Falco’s Jackie, on the other hand, has continued to perform well for the network. Last year, Edie won the Best Actress Emmy for her role as troubled emergency room nurse Jackie Peyton.
